Teacher Statement
I am so thrilled to bring you the 2nd Annual African Diaspora History Fair. This fair exists to celebrate the contributions of African peoples all over the world. The word 'diaspora' refers to a group of people that have their beginnings in one geographic location and are spread all over the world (both voluntarily and involuntarily) yet, despite the separation, still share core elements of their culture. African-American history does not begin with slavery. It begins on the majestic continent of Africa whose people are responsible for some of the first universities, explorations, governmental structures, artistic expressions, and more. We decided to name this year's fair, "The Black Joy Experience" because though there are hard parts to this history, there is tremendous triumph. We did not want to be caught in what Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie calls, "the danger of a single story". It is important that all people get the right to not always be told their history is marred with scars, but full of beauty and wonder. Whether you attend the fair in person or online, we hope you leave enlightened and a curiosity to learn more!
